Several of our services are priced using a “price per square inch”.   To calculate the total square inches of a your project multiply the width by the length.    The type of quilting selected and any additional products or services must also be considered.    You can use our new Quilting Request Form to make your selections and calculate an estimate of the cost of finishing your project.    Please call to discuss how to get the best quilting at a reasonable cost.

Calculating the Total Cost of a Quilting Project

To calculate an appropriate cost estimate of a particular project you will need the following information:
  • measurements of the quilt top – width and length in inches
  • type of Longarm machine quilting you select  - Edge to Edge or Custom
  • list of the additional products and/or services you select – multiple thread colors, batting, binding, etc.

Setup and Basting Charge for Quilts

Setup and Basting is $0.005 per square inch and includes a multitude of services including creating the quilt 'sandwich' on the Longarm machine, basting, new needle, removing basting, trimming the quilt, design auditions, custom stitching plan, light pressing, and minor repairs.  Hand Quilters Basting is $0.004 per square inch.     The creation of the three layer quilting 'sandwich' is done by first attaching the backing to the Longarm machine, then layering on the batting and finally the quilt top.   Basting is sewing the three layers together with long basting stitches - both horizontally and vertically - that hold the layers together during the quilting process (whether by hand or on the Longarm).   When the quilting is completed the basting stitches are removed and the Quilt is trimmed and ready for binding.

Longarm Quilting Services

Edge to Edge:    Edge to Edge (E2E) quilting uses all over designs such as meanders, swirls, waves, loops, hearts, or stars to hold the layers together with continuous stitching from one edge to the other.  Charges are based on the design selected.
Edge to Edge Quilting Charge:
  • $0.018 per square inch - E2E Meander design, lite quilting, single line continuous stitching with one (1) color thread.
  • $0.022 per square inch - one (1) E2E design (swirls, flowers, stars, etc.) with one (1) color thread.
  • $45.00 Minimum Longarm Quilting Charge for E2E quilting.

Custom Quilting:    Please call for a personalized plan.   Custom Quilting usually includes more than one quilting design or style, for example: motifs, stitch-in-the-ditch (SID), and E2E designs.   Custom Quilting can also be quilting one design with certain areas kept free of quilting.
  • $65.00 Minimum Longarm Quilting Charge for Custom Quilting
Estimating a Custom Quilting Charge  -  The are two (2) components included in the Custom Quilting Charge:
  1. "Basic Custom Quilting" charge of $0.046 per square inch includes two (2) quilting designs and one (1) Thread Color.  The Custom Quilting of your project includes a Custom Plan for your approval of the stitching of your project.
  2. "Additional Design Charge" - Each 'additional' quilting design used adds $0.01 to the $0.046 Basic Custom Charge to determine the "Total Custom Quilting Charge".  For example, if 6 quilting designs are used, the Quilting Charge would be $0.046 (the first 2 designs) plus an Additional Design Charge of $0.04 for the additional 4 quilting designs.
Therefore, if more than 2 designs are used in a quilt, the two (2) components above are added together to determine the Total Cost per Square Inch for the Custom Quilt project.   The example with 6 designs would result in the following Custom Quilting Cost per Square Inch:              Basic Custom Quilting                       $0.046
                                           Additional Design Charge                  $0.040 (4 additional designs x $.01 = $0.04)
Custom Quilting Cost per Square Inch                   $0.086 per Square Inch (for Example with 6 designs)

Additional Thread Charge:   In both Edge to Edge and Custom Quilting an "Additional Thread Charge" may apply.
Each additional Thread Color used in a quilt will add an Additional Thread Charge of $2.50 to the total cost.  For example, if a quilt requires 3 Thread Colors, the first color is included in the Edge to Edge cost per square inch and with a Custom Quilt the first color is incuded in the $0.046 Basic Custom Quilting charge.   In the example, the 2nd and 3rd Thread colors will add $2.50 each (2 x $2.50) or an "Additional Thread Charge" of $5.00 to the total cost.

This photo shows the detail of the final Custom Quilting Plan approved by the Client.
Example - Calculating Custom Quilting Charges

The Mariners' Compass Quilt stitching Plan approved by the Client included 9 individual stitching designs and five (5) Thread Colors.  The Custom Quilting Charge was Calculated as follows:
     Basic Custom Quilting - 2 designs, 1 color       $ 0.046
     Added Designs - 7 additional designs              $ 0.070
                Custom Quilting Charge                      $ 0.116 /sq inch
     Additional Thread Charge:
         4 additional thread colors @ $2.50              $10.00

The Total Cost of any Quilt project is mainly dependent on the size,  i.e., the total square inches of the quilt/project.   The cost of the services that depend on total square inches are setup, basting, quilting, and batting.  The Setup and Basting charge is $0.005 per sq inch.  This charge covers a  custom design plan, setup on the Longarm machine, basting, bobbins, a new needle, removing basting, and the finishing trim.   The binding cost is also based on size in that the perimeter (distance around all four sides) is used to calculate the binding cost.

Binding Services - using 'your binding' * or your fabric

Creative Quilting offers the following four (4) Binding Service Options:
Option 1.    $0.05 per linear inch - Attach ‘your binding’ so you can finish the hand sewing.
Option 2.    $0.10 per linear inch -  We make the binding with your fabric and attach it for you to finish.
Option 3.    $0.15 per linear inch - We make the binding with your fabric, attach the binding, and finish sewing the binding - you receive the completed quilt.
Option 4.    $0.20 per linear inch - We make the two-color (flange) binding with your fabric, attach the binding, and finish sewing the binding – you receive the completed quilt.

 * ‘Your binding’ is made by you, pressed into double fold binding, and included with your quilt top and backing.  If your quilt has curved edges, ‘your binding’ must be double fold bias binding.

Calculating the Binding Service Cost:  Binding service charges are calculated on the perimeter (distance around all four sides) of the quilt in linear inches.   For example, to calculate the binding service cost of a baby quilt that is 45" by 50" you add 45" + 50" + 45" + 50" = 190" (linear inches).   For Option 1. the binding cost is 190" x $0.05 = $9.50

Batting

Calculating Batting Cost:   We offer 80/20 cotton batting designed for Longarm machine quilting for $0.005 per square inch.  The batting must be at least 4" wider than quilt top and 4" longer than the quilt top.   To calculate the cost of purchasing batting you must calculate the correct total square inches* for the batting times $0.005.  (*Use the 4" addition to the width and 4" addition to the length of the quilt top to calculate the correct total square inches for the batting)
Examples follow:
  • Baby quilt  measuring 45” x 50”:   49" x 54" = 2,646 sq inches x $0.005 = $13.23 charge for batting
  • Queen quilt  measuring 70” x 90”:   74 x 94" = 6,596 sq inches x $0.005 = $34.78 charge for batting

Rescuing Vintage Quilts

Whether you have an old quilt top that a family member made and never had quilted or a Vintage quilt that needs repaired, I can meet with you to discuss what you would like to have done.     Photos below show a recent Quilt Rescue of a Vintage Hand Embroidered Redwork quilt.
Picture
This is the upper left corner of a Vintage Redwork quilt top with 36 blocks. It is more than 80 years old and was hand embroidered and sewn together by my Client's Grandmother and Great Grandmother. The outer edge of the quilt top was turned under and hand embroidered all around the outer edge of the quilt top.
Picture
The completed Vintage Redwork quilt shown on a queen bed. There were a few repairs necessary and the hand sewn seams between each block as well as the hand embroidery over the seams were stablized by stitching along each side of the embroidery. The outer border was quilted with "Pretty Posies Border" by Tammy Finkler.
Picture
This is the same upper left corner of the Redwork quilt top after I appliqued the top to the first border, added a second outer border and custom quilted the entire quilt. I also added a two-color flange binding, a hanging sleeve, and a custom label dating the creation of the top and recognizing the family members who created the quilt top.

A closeup photo of the center block of the top row in the upper left corner of the quilt. The quilt design used in each block is "Trim Background Grid and Ivy" by Anita Shackelford. I used So Fine #50 thread which did not detract from the Redwork and stabilized the entire quilt.
