Prepare Your Quilt Top

Before sending or bringing the finished top in for quilting, review the steps below.
  • Be sure that your backing and batting are 8 inches wider and 8 inches longer than your quilt top. For example:  a quilt top 40” by  60”, needs batting and backing 48” by  68”.  The additional fabric - 4" on each side and 4" on the top and bottom - is necessary to attach the three layers to the machine and be able to machine quilt the design to the edges of the quilt top.
  • Keep all layers separate.   Do not pin or baste the top to the batting and/or the backing.
  • Press the top and the backing.   Please no bedsheet backings.
  • Mark the 'top' of the quilt top and the 'top' of the backing with safety pins.
  • Make sure the top and backing are squared with no ragged edges.
  • Clip all loose threads and repair any loose seams.
  • PLEASE NO embellishments such as buttons, lace, and other trims.    They interfere with the Longarm quilting process and should be added after the quilt has been Longarm quilted.

The Gammill Statler Stitcher ready to quilt the modern wall hanging shown in another photo. The studio has a walkout to our patio where we love to watch the birds at the feeders.

My drop leaf work table is usually covered with a cutting mat and work. The quilt in this photo is a wholecloth quilt that I have to trim and bind. And that's my Grandmother's wooden ironing board in the background.

The studio is spacious and the "conversation corner" is comfy. You can see my work table and bookcases in the back.

The sewing and office section of the studio has a great window that looks out to our back yard.

My new work table that Don made for me. It's a great counter height table - 40" x 62" - large enough to work on and trim large quilts. It also has 4 drawers and 8 cubbies for storage as well as casters for mobility.

Just another view so you can see that one end has an 'overhang' so I can sit on a 'bar-stool' to work on something while sitting.
